48 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES (2006-2016)

We are delighted that our students have done Singapore and Hwa Chong proud with excellent results on the world stage.

Between 2006 and 2016, Hwa Chong students won a total of 48 World Championship titles in various fields.

These international competitions attract thousands of entries from top schools, universities and research institutes in different countries across different continents.

To emerge champions, our students had to display a whole range of skills from future problem solving, creativity, team building, mathematical prowess, entrepreneurship to out-of-the-box thinking.

Founded in 1974 by creativity pioneer, Dr. E. Paul Torrance in the United States, every year about 250,000 students from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, the United States and Singapore compete in this global competition.

In 2016, the HCI team clinched the overall world championship title for all the categories at Michigan State University.

In 2015, the HCI team was also conferred the covetd E. Paul Torrance Beyonder Award which is bestowed on projects that “have far excelled beyond what is normally expected of students”.

Organized by The National Taiwan Science Education Center, the Taiwan International Science Fair is a science research competition for high school students from grades nine through 12. The event brings together about 250 domestic finalists and 40 overseas students from 20 nations to compete for the awards.

The team of three HCI students was given the top prize in the Medicine and Health category and the prestigious Young Scientist Award for their outstanding project. HCI was the only winning group from Singapore.

The coveted Angus Ross prize is awarded to the best performing non-British candidates in the GCE A-Level H2 English Literature examination. The winning scripts are selected from about 12,000 entries worldwide.

Each year, a group of senior Cambridge University examiners selects outstanding responses that display maturity of thought and brilliance of expression among other criteria. These are scripts by A-Level candidates outside the United Kingdom taking the various International A-Level English Literature syllabuses, examined by the Cambridge International Examinations.

Since the Angus Ross prize was first awarded in 1987, 28 Singaporeans have been conferred the award, of whom half (14) are HCI students.

Each year, more than 30 teams from countries like Germany, Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore take part in this demanding multi-disciplinary competition. Competitors undergo 72 hours of continuous grueling competition in order to fabricate an innovative product that requires multidisciplinary knowledge, teamwork and grit. Competing teams are isolated and have to utilize their knowledge in the Natural Sciences and Social Sciences as well as Physical Fitness skills to excel.

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, with approximately 1,700 high school students from over 75 countries competing annually.

Often referred to as the ‘Olympics of Science Research’, the competition was held from 10-15 May 2015, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, USA.

The HCI team was also one of only four teams out of the 286 projects reviewed to be awarded the coveted Sigma Xi Special Award for Team Science in the Life Science category. This award is given to the teams with the best demonstrations of interdisciplinary research and team science.

 

16th Asean+ Age Group Chess Championships (AAG)

International Chess Master

 

 

452 youths from 16 countries participated in this prestigious chess competition. A Hwa Chong student was conferred Singapore’s first individual gold in the open under-20 division, making him the nation’s first junior to obtain the international Master (IM) title in a decade.

 

3rd Hi-Tech International Piano Competition

Held every three years in Tianjin China, this prestigious international piano competition sees more than 300 participants from over 25 countries. The judging panel consists of 16 adjudicators with professors hailing from music conservatories around the world, including Russia, Holland, Germany and China. A Hwa Chong student participated in the 3rd Hi-Tech International Piano Competition and emerged as Champion despite the intense competition.

The World Scholar’s Cup is an annual global academic tournament that tests participants’ knowledge in a plethora of disciplines, ranging from the arts to the sciences.  Participants have to emerge regional champions first (e.g. Adelaide, Los Angeles, Switzerland, Santiago, Bangkok, Beijing, Dubai) before competing on the world stage.

Competing against established teams from top schools and mathematics circles around the world such as the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, San Jose’s Sega Maths Academy and Colorado Maths Circle, our students have clinched the championships for five years.

The 2015 team attained a perfect score 30 out of 30.

In 2014, out of 340 entries worldwide, three HCI groups were shortlisted as part of the 10 finalists; one of which emerged world champion.

24 teams from around the world took part in the competition and the top two teams of the preliminary round squared off in the finals. A HCI student bagged the Best Speaker Award and helped Team Singapore beat their South African opponents in the finals.

Joint World-First

 

Ranked First and Third in the World

 

 

 

In 2013, three out of four students representing Singapore were from HCI.  In that year, Team Singapore was ranked joint world-first alongside the United States.

Held in Tsukuba Japan (12-19 July 2009), the IBO 2009 saw 221 international participants (maximum 4 representatives from each country) from 59 countries, including traditional powerhouses like China, USA, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Despite facing stiff competition from about 1,100 international participants, our HCI dancers won the championships and also took home the following additional awards: Best Ethnic Dance, Best Contemporary Piece and Best Choreography.

 

60th European Music Festival for Young People

The festival caters to choir and instrumental ensembles in alternate years. Each year, the festival draws 4,000 to 6,000 youth from all over the world, to pit their musical talents.

The IRML invites some of the best and brightest students worldwide to compete in the international competition, outperforming traditional powerhouses from China and the United States. The competition is an extension of the American Regions Mathematical League (ARML) that began in 1976. The ARML annual competition attracts exceptionally talented US students in Mathematics from top schools like Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology to take part.

The HMMT is a prestigious annual mathematics tournament for high school students organized by Harvard and MIT. Every year, the tournament sees close to 1,000 participants from some of the best international schools; making it one of the largest mathematics competitions in the world.

Each year, the Barcelona Dance Award draws participation from about 1500 dancers worldwide.

 

Festival of Songs Olomouc

A prestigious international choral competition held in Olomouc, the Czech Republic, the 38th Festival of Songs saw tough competition from 106 choirs from 11 countries.

The World Junior Wushu Championships is an international sporting event organized by the International Wushu Federation for male and female competitors below 18 years of age. In 2010, the tournament saw over 700 participants from more than 40 countries competing in both the Taolu and Sanda competition. A HCI student bagged the title once in 2008 and again in 2010.

This global competition challenges student teams to develop interactive educational portals on topics of their choosing and demonstrate critical 21st-Century skills, including teamwork, technology, and communication skills. In 2009, the team emerged champion from among 955 teams from 83 countries.

Five Hwa Chong Institution students and three high school students from the Loudoun County Academy of Science in Virginia worked across borders and twelve time zones to clinch the highly prestigious Extreme Collaboration Award in the Stanford University Global Innovation Tournament. More than 61 institutions from 14 countries participated in the Stanford University Global Innovation Tournament.  The winning HCI-AOS team was featured in The Washington Post.

 

5th World Choir Games

In that year, the World Choir Games was arguably the largest competition in the history of choir music, with 71 international jurors and about 441 ensembles from 93 nations taking part. There were more than 600 performances in 28 different categories. The Choir earned themselves two Gold Medals in the Folklore and Mixed Choir categories.

 

Global Talentrepreneur Innovation & Collaboration Business Competition

Held in Taipei between 23 and 28 July, the competition required students to write a comprehensive business plan and present their ideas before an international panel of 15 judges comprising professors, government officials and venture capitalists.

Each year, the highly prestigious international creative problem-solving competition attracts more than 3,000 finalists from countries like Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Kazakhstan, Germany, Poland, USA, and Singapore. To qualify for the International Finals, all the finalists had to emerge champions in their respective state/country.
