In Memoriam - Mr Tan Keong Choon (1918 – 2015)

03 Nov 2015

We are saddened by the passing of former Chairman Mr Tan Keong Choon. Mr Tan served as the Chairman of the Management Committee for The Chinese High School (TCHS) for 26 years and the Chairman of Hwa Chong Junior College (HCJC) for 22 years.

Mr Tan dedicated his life to promoting bilingual education in Singapore, he was particularly passionate in encouraging the learning of Chinese language, culture and values. He was instrumental in The Chinese High School turning Special Assistance Plan in 1979. Under his leadership, TCHS became a leading bilingual school in the region. In 1988, he strategically turned TCHS into the first Independent School in Singapore, and helped the school develop the vision of a world-class school.

Mr Tan had also played a pivotal role in establishing HCJC, the first government-aided Junior College in Singapore, in 1974. His pioneering spirit was essential in not just setting up the college but seeing it through its most trying times.

In 1987, the college was declared structurally unsound and had to be relocated. Mr Tan then headed a massive fund raising effort in 1988, rallying staff, students, parents, alumni and the Chinese community from all walks of life, to contribute to redeveloping the College. As a result of Mr Tan's philanthropic efforts, the college triumphantly returned to its new premises on the Bukit Timah Campus in 1991.

Mr Tan's altruism, vision and tireless sacrifice were exemplified in his very actions and life. As generations of Hwa Chongians pass through these very gates, we are comforted to know that his legacy will continue far beyond this life.
