Hwa Chong’s Aspiring Researchers Win Singapore Junior Water Prize 2018

The Singapore Junior Water Prize is an annual national competition organised by the Lien Foundation, Sembcorp Industries and Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and supported by PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency. The winning team of this competition will clinch an all-expenses paid trip to Stockholm, Sweden to compete in the prestigious international Stockholm Junior Water Prize in Sweden.

Hwa Chong Institution achieved commendable results in this competition which was held at Ngee Ann Poly on 23 May. The team comprising Johnny Xiao Hong Yu, Ho Shane and Caleb Liao Jia Le, all from 4S3 clinched the champion title with their project “A novel, ecofriendly synthesis of reduced graphene oxide for water filters”. The team will represent Singapore in the International Stockholm Junior Water Prize in Sweden from 24 August to 31 August.

Another team comprising Feng Chong Hui (4S2), Descun Wu Gaoxian (4S1) and Guan Yangchen (4S1) clinched the merit award with their project “Investigating the effectiveness of animal bone char and bone meal as adsorbents for water purification”

Reflecting on the research process and his educational journey through science, Johnny Xiao said: “my journey in scientific research has not always been smooth sailing, and there are always obstacles ahead, however, what I have learnt is that with perseverance and resilience, any challenges can be overcome. I am truly grateful for the opportunities to explore the field of science research which gave me exposure to the international world of science”
