Hwa Chong’s Aspiring Researchers Win Singapore Junior Water Prize

The Singapore Junior Water Prize is an annual national competition organised by the Lien Foundation, Sembcorp Industries and Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and supported by PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency. The winning team of this competition will clinch an all-expenses paid trip to Stockholm, Sweden to compete in the prestigious international Stockholm Junior Water Prize in Sweden.

Hwa Chong Institution achieved commendable results in this virtual competition which was held on 28 May during the circuit breaker period. The team comprising Low Jeen Liang (4S3), Tan Wei An (4S3) and Yiu Yi Hin Kinsey (4S1) clinched the First Prize with their project “A novel electrochemical enhancement of activated carbon fibre for the purification of contaminated pharmaceutical effluents”. The team will represent Singapore in the International Stockholm Junior Water Prize which will also be held virtually.

Another team comprising Yu Zhenning (4S2), Phua Kai Jie (4S3) and Tew En Hao (4S2) clinched the Commendation Prize with their project “Rice Husk-derived Activated Carbon as an Eco-Friendly Adsorbent for Water Purification”.

Both teams were mentored by Mrs-Sow Peh Yoke Keow (Lead Teacher/Chemistry and Research)
