Hwa Chongians Lead In Environmental Outreach Efforts22 Nov 2018
The SEC-StarHub School Green Awards (SGA) is a self-audited voluntary environmental programme which serves as a platform for students to initiate, develop and showcase their own environmental outreach projects. The SGA receives yearly submissions from local and overseas schools of all levels.
We would like to congratulate the Green Council who has clinched the Singapore Environment Council’s Vanda Miss Joaqium Award (conferred on schools with an overall score of more than 90%). The award criteria consists of 2 segments – school wide initiatives to green the campus and environmental outreach efforts by students. While the former is a questionnaire that tracks the school’s environmental performance, the latter involves a student-initiated and student-led outreach project targeted at an environmental cause.
The student project was focused on promoting the theme ‘An Active and Gracious Community: Biodiversity, Litter-free environment’ through outreach activities publicizing the Animal Concerns Research And Education Society (ACRES’) wildlife rescue efforts. Amidst a diverse range of environmental efforts, targeted activities included exhibitions at the Jurong Regional Library during the June holidays, organising a carnival with animal-themed games, a Green Camp for 200 primary 3 to 5 students and serving as Bukit Timah Wildlife Network volunteers to enthuse the public on the importance of preserving biodiversity.
