Congratulations to the Hwa Chong team who clinched the top prize in the junior college category of the Senoko Sustainability Challenge organized jointly by Senoko Energy Pte Ltd and the Ministry of Education. Their winning proposal for entry in the Energy for Sustainable Future category entailed an innovative organic Dye-Sensitised Solar Cell (DSSC) created from food waste; suitable for use in applications such as building facades and windows. A key highlight of the proposal also included constructing a Solar Tree from the DSSC for use on Singapore roads.

The project not only provided the platform for the team to synthesize and apply what they have learnt in class but also fuelled their interest in developing future technological innovations. Team leader Bryan Lin Cheng Yee (15S68) shared:
“… the project has also allowed me to pursue things that I am passionate about. I look up to Elon Musk, as he is committed to green technologies…I really enjoy reading up more about green technologies in general and about the project. For instance, in my free time, I would read about emerging green technologies and how it can change our future. This has really inspired me to work on green technologies that would be inevitably used by humans in the future.”

For like-minded students like Bryan who have an interest in green technology and are keen to continue to develop the Solar Tree idea, please contact Mr. Low Kay Siang (Lecturer, Chemistry): lowks@hci.edu.sg
