We would like to extend our congratulations to Amadeus Aristo Winarto (18S7F) and Ngo Phuc Cuong (18S7B) who emerged as champions in the 1st  International Artificial Intelligence (AI) Fair held in Beijing, PRC. This year’s participating projects from various high schools covered a range of focus areas such as face recognition, smart cars, smart campus, environmental prediction, waste sorting, human body abnormal behavior recognition.

Hosted by the New Education Research Institute and supported by SenseTime, this competition aimed to provide secondary school students worldwide with the opportunity to share their experiences and hone their passion in learning more about AI and its potential applications. The 2019 competition comprised 118 projects from 43 secondary schools in China (including Hong Kong) and 14 projects from 13 schools in the US, India, Japan, and Singapore.

In the course of this competition, professors from universities such as the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University, Peking University, and industry experts from Apple, Qualcomm, Alibaba, and Cambricon Technologies conducted in-depth discussions and provided professional advice and guidance to student finalists.

Ngo Phuc Cuong (18S7B) shared that:
“I have gleaned many insights of recent deep learning development, especially in the field of computer vision and generative adversarial network. The nature of this research demands thorough understanding of such techniques for me to adapt some of them to the specific needs of my project.”

Amadeus Aristo Winarto (18S7F) remarked that:
“I learned how to present my work to the public which may not have the necessary knowledge in terms of jargon to understand our work. I had to explain it simply and without the scientific jargon to make the members of the public understand.”
