In November 2015, a group of 10 students represented Hwa Chong at the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Challenge for the Urban Built Environment (URA CUBE), an annual workshop cum competition for Pre-University students.

Over the course of 4 days, 150 students from 19 participating Junior Colleges and Polytechnics delved into the intricacies of planning and urban design for Singapore and gained first-hand experience as urban planners. Teams were required to design plans to redevelop Paya Lebar Central, and present their ideas with maps and a scale model of the area to a panel of architects and urban planners.

As Mr Desmond Lee, Senior Minister of State of Home Affairs and National Development remarked at the launch of the URA’s Urban Planning Festival and CUBE award ceremony, with Singapore being a highly dense city-state, the URA has to be judicious and meticulous in urban planning and collaborate closely with the community to make our city a vibrant and liveable one. He also added that the URA has to deliberately reach out to the youth as they are “stewards of our urban landscape for generations that come after [us]”.

The Hwa Chong team comprising Cheng Woon Jo, Chia Chwen Yeu, Chin Kee Ting, Pang Shi Ying, Zhou Yumian, Hope Leong, Oliver Li, See Yongsong, Yew Ke Yao and Zhang Zhenglin (all from 15S6H) certainly were encouraged to imagine new ways of making Singapore better, as they not only clinched the top prize but also the ‘Outstanding Award’. The students are grateful for the support shown by the school, the Geography department and Mrs Chua-Ngui Li Young (Education Consultant, Geography) and are donating a portion of the cash winnings to the school’s Needy Pupil’s Fund.
