Hwa Chong Students Clinch Impact Program Funding Award28 Mar 2018
We are proud to be one of the seven outstanding groups worldwide to be granted Impact Funding of $20, 500 by the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (SIGKDD). The aim of the KDD Impact Program is to support projects that promote data science, increase its impact on society, and help the data science community.
The project “Budding Data Scientist Hackathon” led by alumnus Chua Hui Xiang (06S61) comprises five teams of students from the school (please see members below).

Students with alumnus Chua Hui Xiang (06S61)
Students with alumnus Kenneth Soo Chuan Ji (09S7F)
Each team will help tackle a social challenge of their interest using data science with the possibility of improving data maturity within Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs). This is also the first time our students are able to gain real-world experience working with data science problems as part of classroom learning.
The students underwent training in data analytics programming by their school mentors Mr Joseph Tan Choo Kee (Education Consultant/ Infocomm Studies), Mr Chen Zenghui (Lecturer/ Mathematics) and Dr Ang Lai Chiang (Senior Consultant/ Research and China Projects, Mathematics) as well as by our alumnus by Kenneth Soo Chuan Ji (09S7F). Coupled with Mathematical modelling and extensive knowledge of statistics, the students discussed and proposed solutions to various VWOs, levelling up their real world problem-solving capacity.
We wish the team all the best as they continue with their project and present the mid-project results and outcomes at the KDD 2018 conference in London in August 2018.Learn more about General News at HCI
