The Greenwave Environmental Care competition (organised by Sembcorp Marine) is an annual platform for students to showcase their practical ideas for achieving environmental sustainability amid growing environmental threats. The competition received 279 project submissions from more than 900 students in 2016.

HCI has achieved commendable results. They are as follows:

1st prize and team collaboration award
Ooi Ren An (17S7B)
Yap Kang Zheng (17S7B)
Lim An Guan (17S7J)
Mentor: Mrs Sow-Peh Yoke Keow

Project: Synthesis of cellulose aerogel for sorption of oils
Brief synopsis: The team was concerned about the harmful impact of oil spills on marine flora and fauna and group created cellulose aerogels which absorb oil pollutants from seawater.  The aerogel synthesized has many interesting features, it is light, porous, repels water but absorbs oil and can be reused for at least 5 cycles.
