The World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC), the largest international tournament for debaters aged 14 to 19 was hosted by Singapore from 27 July  to 6 August 2015. Team Singapore, comprising students from Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), Raffles Institution and Hwa Chong Institution, took home the world championship title amidst stiff competition from international debaters hailing from 50 over nations. Meeting Canada at the final round and garnering a score of 8-1 with the motion “THAT governments should provide a guaranteed universal basic income”, Team Singapore also became the first host nation to win the WSDC.

Hwachongian and Team Singapore representative Bryan Yan Kai Jie (15A14) was the highest ranked Singaporean debater. He was placed  4th in the world for his overall performance. Back in 2014, he had already clinched the Best Speaker of the Tournament Award for both the Singapore Secondary School Debating Championships and the Asian Schools Debating Championships.

Bryan’s stellar performance epitomizes the tradition of HCI students excelling in the debating national team for the past 5 years. We continue to give him our unfailing support and wish him all the best for his aspirations to represent Singapore next year at Stuttgart, Germany.
