Hwa Chong Student Emerges First in 3rd Singapore Astronomy Olympiad03 Aug 2015
Hwa Chong students continue to achieve noteworthy results in various national astronomy and astrophysics-related competitions.
Singapore Astronomy Olympiad
Keven Loo from 14S7J obtained Gold and was first overall at the 3rd Singapore Astronomy Olympiad (SAO) in March this year. Keven will represent Singapore at the 9th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) in Indonesia this year. Hwa Chong students also attained two Silver and three Bronze medals, as well as five Honourable Mentions.
The students are:
|Nguyen Hoang Mai||15S7B||Bronze|
|Chee Hsin Yee||15S7D||HM|
|Lee Shi Qi Gladys||14S7B||HM|
|Beatrix Tung Xue Lin||14S6G||HM|
|Nicholas Phung-Zhang||4I2 (HS)||HM|
The SAO is modelled after the international Astronomy Olympiads, which aims to develop the imagination, creativity and independent thinking of all participants. It is also an internationally recognized annual astronomy event for high school students. Outstanding students have the opportunity to participate in the IOAA, in which Singapore has been participating since 2007.
NYP Astronomy Competition
Although the Astronomy Club is not a full-fledged CCA in Hwa Chong High School, the High-School students have already reaped incredible results. At the NYP Astronomy Competition, Hwa Chong clinched first place in the general category, ahead of traditional powerhouses with established astronomy CCAs.
The longest-running annual astronomy competition in Singapore, the Nanyang Polytechnic Astronomy Competition is held in March every year and tests students on a combination of astronomy and astrophysics trivia, as well as conceptual knowledge of basic astrophysics.
In this year’s AstroChallenge in June, Hwa Chong managed to clinch 2nd place overall in the Senior Category. Keven Loo (14S7J) attained the title of Best Astronomer in the competition, coming in 1st in the individual round. Against all odds, the team has done the school proud, improving from the previous years.
In the Junior Category, Team 1 also managed to reach the finals, but finally lost out to more experienced participants. The students, most of which are still in Secondary 2 and Secondary 3, have already started preparation for a better showing in 2016.
The NUS-NTU AstroChallenge is one of the best-known annual astronomy competitions in Singapore, organised by the Astronomical Societies of the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. As the largest astronomy-based competition in Singapore, it aims to cultivate an interest in astronomy both as an intellectual pursuit and lifelong passion as it draws contestants from schools across the country.
The teachers-in-charge of the Astronomy Club at Hwa Chong Institution are Dr Tan Kok Kim (Principal Consultant 1/ Science), Dr Dave Lommen (Lecturer/ Physics) and Mr Arthur Gow (Lecturer/ Physics). The school would like to congratulate all students and their teachers on their commendable achievements at the NYP Astronomy Competition, the SAO and the NUS-NTU AstroChallenge in 2015, and look forward to even better performances in 2016.
