Hwa Chong Institution Welcomes Alumnus as New Principal

Hwa Chong Institution warmly welcomes alumnus Mr Pang Choon How, currently Director of Mother Tongue Languages, Curriculum Planning and Development Division, Ministry of Education, as Principal-designate of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI).

Serving as the third Principal of Hwa Chong Institution since the merger of The Chinese High School and Hwa Chong Junior College in 2005, Mr Pang will succeed Dr Hon Chiew Weng as Principal-designate of HCI from 15 December 2017.

Effectively bilingual, Mr Pang has a strong interest in bilingualism and biculturalism. He graduated from the Chinese High School in 1992. During his school days in the Chinese High School, he was awarded the Hwa Chong Alumni Book Prize and the Chuan Hup Scholarship. In 1993, Mr Pang was awarded the Language Elective Programme (LEP) Scholarship by MOE to study LEP (Chinese) at Hwa Chong Junior College. He took up a Public Service Commission Scholarship in 1995 to read Chinese Language and Literature at Peking University. In 2002, he was conferred a Masters of Arts at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Mr Desmond Ong, Chairman/HCI Board of Governors, welcomed the incoming Principal. He said:

“The Board and I look forward to the appointment of Mr Pang Choon How as our next Principal. Mr Pang is a young and dynamic leader. With his robust bi-cultural background, he is well-placed to lead Hwa Chong, an institution with a strong legacy in history and culture. An educator with a strong belief in holistic education, I am certain that he will continue to take HCI to greater heights as he leads the school into its next phase of growth and development.”

Dr Hon, current Principal of HCI said:

“I warmly welcome Mr Pang Choon How to HCI. I am sure he will enjoy his time here, as much as I have. It has been my honour to have served Hwa Chong for the last 35 years. I look forward to working with the Board and Mr Pang to ensure a smooth transition. I am confident that HCI is in good hands under his capable and visionary leadership.”

Mr Pang will begin his term as Principal on 1 January 2018. Dr Hon retires from his role as Principal, a position he has held since 2010, on 31 December 2017.
