Hwa Chong Institution Bids Fond Farewell to Principal

We would like to wish Dr Hon Chiew Weng, the current Principal of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) a happy retirement, after having been with the school for the past 35 years. He started his teaching career as a Physics teacher at The Chinese High school in 1982 and was subsequently appointed as Principal of the Institution in 2010.

In 2005, with his support as Principal (HS), HCI became the first Integrated Programme School formed from a merger in 2005. The Hwa Chong-Beijing Satellite Campus, a first for a Singapore School was established under his leadership as Deputy CEO / Principal (HS) in 2007, and he went on to spearhead the FutureSchools@Singapore initiative in 2008.  Under his leadership, Hwa Chong Institution was conferred the Singapore Quality Award (SQA) in 2010 and the SQA (Special Commendation) in 2016.

As Principal, Dr Hon’s key interests included enhancing the use of technology and innovation in education, actively participating in global initiatives, fostering a robust research culture, and focusing on the professional and leadership development of teachers. He was also instrumental in leading several school-wide research initiatives in curriculum design and classroom strategies.

Throughout his career, Dr Hon has been deeply committed to the role of schools in promoting holistic excellence, particularly in nurturing student leaders with both passion and integrity to serve others. A vigorous advocate of education research, independent learning, community service and entrepreneurship, he was always on a quest for unceasing improvement.

Dr Hon is the second principal of Hwa Chong Institution and will be succeeded by Mr Pang Choon How on 15 December 2017.
