Jointly organized by Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the 2017 International Science Youth Forum (ISYF 2017) welcomed 7 distinguished scientists comprising 4 Nobel Laureates, 1 Fields Medallist, 1 Millennium Technology Prize winner and 1 A.M. Turing Award recipient to engage 120 students from 43 different schools from 19 countries.

The increase in participants from local schools this year is significant as they are encouraged to consider fields in STEM as a career choice and make valuable contributions to Singapore.

Dr Hon Chiew Weng, Principal of Hwa Chong Institution, said, "The International Science Youth Forum (ISYF) continues to be an excellent forum for budding scientists all over the world to develop a global perspective, by having meaningful dialogues with world-renowned scientists and researchers, as well as other passionate young scientists. I look forward to seeing the participants embark on an insightful and educational journey.”

Through the Nobel Forum, Master Classes and Dialogue Sessions, participants interacted with these Nobel Laureates and other eminent scientists. As part of the 5-day programme, students also visited various industries and A*StartCentral.   They also participated in hands-on activities at NUS and NTU’s research facilities.

Other than Professor Rudolph A Marcus (The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1992), we have also, for the first time, Millennium Technology Prize winners and A.M. Turing awardees participating in the ISYF. They are Professor Michael Grätzel (The 2010 Millennium Technology Prize) and Professor Barbara Liskov (A.M. Turing Award 2008). (Please see Annex B for Biographies).

Our guest-of-honour, Mr Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) and Second Minister of Defence, met the students and eminent scientists, and delivered a welcome address at the Forum’s Grand Ceremony on 18 January 2017. You can access his speech here.
