As part of Hwa Chong’s year-long Centennial Celebrations and in collaboration with Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (SYSNMH), Guest-of-Honour Mr Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Transport & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth officiated the opening of the Hwa Chong Heritage Trail and the “Chinese Business Pioneers – Supporting Singapore’s Education” Travelling Exhibition on the 9th March 2019. Organized by students from the 6th Students’ National Education Council (SNEC) at the College Section, the Hwa Chong Heritage Trail has been specially curated as part of the exhibition launch programme for members of the public to discover the rich history behind Hwa Chong Institution’s iconic landmarks such as the Clock Tower and to allow the public to better appreciate the stories and legacies of our Chinese pioneers through the context of Hwa Chong’s history.

Curated by Hwa Chongians (High School Section) and with guidance from the SYSNMH, the travelling exhibition features early Chinese pioneers such as Mr Tan Kah Kee and Mr Lee Kong Chian, who have both made significant contributions to the educational landscape surrounding Hwa Chong’s founding and development. One of the student docents who conducted the guided tours, Lynette Quah of 18S7G shares that, “I learnt a lot of about Hwa Chong’s heritage along the way, and I also had the opportunity to share my knowledge with those who wanted to know more about Hwa Chong’s history. When the alumni came back for the guided tour, many reminisced fondly about their school years here at Hwa Chong and I was able to better identify with the deep connections they had with the school.”
