As part of its 100th Anniversary celebrations, HCI launched the Kuo Chuan Centennial Art Gallery (KCCAG) Project and organized the Founders’ Day Centennial Gala Dinner, in collaboration with Hwa Chong Alumni Association (HCAA), on 21 March, from 7pm to 10.15pm. Our Guest-of Honour, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong launched the Gallery and delivered a speech at the Dinner.

For the launch of the Project, KCCAG featured the works of pioneer artists cum former Hwa Chong teachers like Liu Kang (刘抗), Cheong Soo Pieng (钟泗滨), Chen Wen Hsi (陈文希) and Chen Chong Swee (陈宗瑞). These esteemed artists have successfully blended the best of the East and West in creating the distinctive “Nanyang style” art-form. Exhibits of alumnus and popular local illustrator Lee Kow Fong (Ah-Guo, 阿 果)’s works, as well as those of the school’s Art Elective Programme’s (AEP) students were included to feature Singapore’s artistic heritage and cultural assets as part of Singapore’s 2019 Bicentennial commemoration.

The Centennial Gala Dinner was a grand homecoming for alumni and members of the Hwa Chong family, which saw a crowd of more than 12,000, including alumni from overseas.

Reflection by Amanda Quah Li En (18S69)
Students, teachers, and alumni alike were eager and honored to welcome Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to Hwa Chong's terraces and field, which had been transformed into a venue of ten large tentages with an elaborate stage setup. Despite the initial downpour, many of the attendees were delighted to simply be back on campus grounds, where many batches have met before and got to meet once again.

“It’s quite heartening to see the student councilors holding umbrellas and helping guests move from tent to tent at the expense of getting wet in the rain.” commented Zhou Xuanle (18S69), a student present at the event. The Hwa Chong pride truly shone through as one looked across the masses of people from all ages, donned in red and yellow, gathered to celebrate this once in a lifetime event with one another. As the night come to a close with a spectacular firework show above the clock tower, it was clear that the school’s generations of students and staff had a lot to be thankful for, and plenty more to look forward to.
