General

Singapore’s students achieved commendable results at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) 2018. Held in Pittsburg, Pennysylvania from 13 to 18 May this year, Intel ISEF 2018 is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. Every year, more than 1,750 high school students from about 75 countries, regions and territories showcase independent research projects that demonstrate the application of scientific principles and concepts outside the classroom as well as innovative solutions to tackle real-world challenges.

We would like to congratulate Dominic Yap Wei Ting (17S7G), Lim Wei Leong, Bryan (17S7D) and Lim Hai Leong, Shawn (17S7B) who have achieved the best performance in the history of participation by the school with their two awards at the prestigious Intel ISEF competition, widely regarded as the ‘Olympics’ of science competitions. They are:

1) Grand awardFirst in the Chemistry category (best achievement out of six Singapore projects and for HCI)
2) Special awardThermo Fisher Scientific award

The team’s project titled ‘Novel Chemical Method for Eco-Friendly Treatment of Sludge’ aims to help the farming industry treat their sludge samples in an environmentally friendly and efficient manner. Seeking to streamline traditional multi-step methods of treatment processes in the industry, the team developed a novel hybrid method of treatment which they hope will be scalable for future use.

As Lim Hai Leong, Shawn (17S7B) commented:
“Science research is a journey of discovery and learning, and I am indeed very grateful for the opportunity to be exposed to this field which has enabled me to explore the wonders of science”.

We hope Hwa Chong students will be inspired by the team’s passion and intrigue for scientific research.
