This year, 109 aspiring scientists from Hwa Chong (see photograph below) submitted 59 projects across more than 10 different categories for the 18th Singapore Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF) organized by Ministry of Education (MOE), the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Science Centre Singapore (SCS). The SSEF is affiliated to the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), which is widely regarded as the Olympics of science competitions.

SSEF Participants

As testimony to the hard work and tenacious spirit displayed by our students, staff and research mentors, the team brought home 5 Gold Medals, with 1 team (see photograph below) comprising Bryan Lim Wei Leong (17S7D), Shawn Lim Hai Leong (17S7B), Dominic Yap Wei Ting (17S7G) selected to represent Singapore at the upcoming Intel ISEF 2018 held in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

Their project titled ‘Electrochemical Treatment of Sludge’, was focused on wastewater treatment technologies. Their research has potential applications for global petrochemical companies and oil refineries.

The team expressed their gratitude for the encouragement they received on their research journey:

The teachers and laboratory staff at Hwa Chong and NUS have provided us with strong support, understanding and encouragement. The three of us have had a fun and memorable time in the laboratory!

This is the fourth consecutive year that our young researchers from HCI will represent Singapore at the Intel ISEF. Remarkably, this team is also representing Singapore for the second time running.
