General

HCI sent 105 students to participate in the 2017 Singapore Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF) organized by Ministry of Education (MOE), the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Science Centre Singapore (SCS). The SSEF is affiliated to the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), which is regarded as the Olympics of science competitions.

As testimony to the hard work and tenacious spirit displayed by our students, staff and research mentors, the team brought home 5 Gold Medals (please see below), with 1 team (Bryan Lim Wei Leong (17S7D), Shawn Lim Hai Leong (17S7B), Dominic Yap Wei Ting (17S7G) selected to represent Singapore at the upcoming Intel ISEF 2017 held in Los Angeles, California. Their project entails turning a bottle of contaminated water completely germ-free within an hour by utilizing a teabag-life filter full of treated used coffee grounds.

This is the third consecutive year that our aspiring young researchers from HCI will represent Singapore at the Intel ISEF.

The team shared that:
“SSEF was indeed an eye opening experience. Not only was it an opportunity for us to share our own research findings, we also had the chance to learn from the judges and other teams, gain scientific insights and to be inspired.”

Dominic  Yap Wei Ting (17S7G) was also one of eight finalists for the 11th A*Star Talent Search (ATS), on top of the gold award his team won from SSEF. He , as well as Bi Jiaming (16S7G) and Jazlynn Tan Xiu Min (16S7G) each received a received a Special Commendation, comprising a certificate and a $1000 cash prize.

A further testament to the strong culture of research and innovation at Hwa Chong, the overall medal tally  alsoincluded 7 Silvers, 9 Bronzes, 6 Merit and 5 Special Awards.
