Naval Officer and Hwa Chong alumnus, Sam Tan Wei Shen (05S75), did our nation and HCI proud by becoming the first foreign student to achieve top graduate honours at the prestigious United States Naval Academy (USNA) on 29 May 2012.

In 2009, Hwa Chong alumnus Justin Lee also topped his cohort at the prestigious US Military Academy at West Point.  Sam is one of 17 Hwa Chong alumni who have topped their cohorts at various international education institutions, including Harvard, Stanford and Oxford.

Sam also received a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) sword that is awarded annually to the midshipman who stands highest in the Order of Merit of their graduating class.

This came as no mean feat as candidates vying for top honours amongst the 1099-strong batch are handpicked by an international fleet of navies. The cohort included 14 cadets from 12 countries, including Pakistan, Taiwan and Romania.

Upon commencing his training at USNA in 2008, Sam was also picked to be the first foreign cadet in its history to take charge of the administrative duties of 4400 cadets. Said Sam in an interview with The Straits Times, ”I was put in an environment in which I challenged and pushed myself beyond my limits and became stronger physically and mentally”.

Sam hopes to take part in international peace support efforts like the anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden.

We congratulate Sam for his outstanding achievements on the international stage.
