Enhancing Social Entrepreneurship

22 Nov 2016

Citi-YMCA Youth For Causes (YFC) is a community initiative supported by Citi and the YMCA of Singapore in 2003. Funded by the Citi Foundation, the programme aims to promote social entrepreneurship and community leadership development among Singapore youths. It provides youths aged 15 to 25 with a platform which includes seed funding, training and volunteer mentorship for executing self-initiated projects to raise public awareness, funds and mobilize volunteers for Voluntary Welfare Organizations (VWOs) of their choice. YFC complements the “Values in Action” (VIA) programme as part of the Ministry of Education’s Character and Citizenship Education.

Mentored by Mr Vincent Tan Chin Leong (Teacher Counsellor, Lecturer/ Chemistry), Project FIHR (Faith In Humanity Restored) was founded in 2014 by 4 Hwa Chong Institution students. In 2016, the team partnered the Singapore Environment Council with the aim of creating a more green and sustainable Singapore. Utilising an entreprenurial approach to raising funds, they sold the Sansevieria Trifasciata (Snake Plant), a plant with air-purifying benefits (as proven by NASA) during the haze season, raising $80,000 in only 5 days of street sales. To date, the team has recruited 2000 more like-minded youth from over 10 schools to hold street sales for 3 different beneficiaries and raising over $170, 000.

We would like to congratulate the team comprising Emil Lim Zhao Wei (13S65), Bradley Lim Wei Yi (16S67), Tan Wei Chuan (4O3) and Gui Ming Jiang (4S1) for being the recipient of 4 awards for their project: YFC Distinction Award, YFC Best Fundraiser Award, YFC Best Fund Management Award, YFC Entrepreneurship Award. The YFC 2016 awards ceremony was held on 15 November and graced by Mr Ng Chee Meng, Minister for Education (Schools) and Second Minister for Transport.

We hope that other Hwa Chong students will be inspired, as Emil shares, to “take an entrepreneurial approach to charity as well.”
