On 21st March 2017, Hwa Chong paid tribute to our Founders and celebrated our friendship with our long-time partner.
In celebrating the philanthropic spirit of our founders, the Hwa Chong family commemorated Founders’ Day with various community activities all over Singapore. In a collaboration with Residents’ Committees and Jurong Central Division, teachers, students and parents donated, packed and distributed food items and necessities to more than 462 needy beneficiary families in Jurong Central
Students and staff also worked with South East CDC and Central CDC to reach out to beneficiaries such as Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled, Hougang Sheng Hong Family Service Centre, elderly residents living in Geylang Bahru rental flats on public assistance, Pertapis Chidren’s Home as well as various Senior Activity Centres in Kembangan-Chai Chee and Tembusu.
In the evening, the school marked the planting of a tree on our campus that symbolised the partnership with Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH). A delonix regia var. flavda, one of only five in Singapore, it was kindly donated by Mr. Mak Chin On, Chairman of the Hwa Chong Seniors’ Club.
Mdm Heng Boey Hong (Principal, Nanyang Girls’ High School) described the partnership as “win-win,” as teachers and students from both schools collaborate and share ideas, further enhancing and strengthening the 6-year Integrated Programme that both schools offer together. Mdm Heng hoped that both schools will continue to work together and achieve greater success.
The tree was planted as part of NYGH’s Global Tree Planting Programme. The Programme aims to plant 100 trees in their partner schools in different parts of the world, and commemorates NYGH’s 100th anniversary.
Following the tree-planting ceremony, Hwa Chong alumni gathered once again at the annual Founders’ Day Dinner. Alumnus Mr. Ang Wei Neng, Member of Parliament for Jurong Group Representation Constituency, graced the occasion as Guest of Honour. Mr. Ang paid tribute to Mr. Tan Kah Kee and other Founders, who were instrumental in setting up the Chinese High School. It was only because of their passion and commitment that Hwa Chong is where it is today.
Hwa Chong has been not just a school, but also a second home for its students like Mr. Ang, who shared about the memorable times he had and how they helped him grow as a person. He also stressed the importance of innovation in the 21st century as Hwa Chongians continue to forge new ground.
On Founders’ Day 2017, we came together to celebrate the very soul of Hwa Chong: a spirit of passion and compassion that continues to spur us to serve our community and nation.
