Direct School Admission DSA–JC Exercise

For Admission to JC1 in 2015

The mission of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) is to develop leaders in research, industry and government.  The school’s Integrated Programme (IP) is designed to provide holistic education by broadening students’ educational experience and maximise their learning opportunities.

We are looking for promising Sec 4 students who demonstrate any of the following:

a.   strong intellectual potential;

b.  leadership potential;

c.   outstanding talent in sports or performing arts; and

d.  character qualities like integrity, resilience, passion and compassion.

To ensure that students fully benefit from our IP, they will be assessed on their demonstrated and potential qualities, beyond mere academic ability.

Successful applicants will be offered a place in Hwa Chong at the start of January 2015. Once a student has accepted the DSA offer, he/she will not take part in the Joint Admission Exercise (JAE). They will be assured of a place in the school on the condition that they satisfy the minimum criterion for admission to junior college based on their GCE O-Level result.

Joint Admission Exercise

The JAE is conducted annually by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to allow Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level certificate holders to apply for admission to courses offered by:

·         Junior Colleges (JC)

·         the Millennia Institute (MI)

·         Polytechnics (Poly)

·         Institute of Technical Education

For Joint Admissions Exercise, the following candidates were eligible to participate except those who had been successfully admitted through the Direct School Admission-Junior Colleges (DSA-JC) or Direct Polytechnic Admission (DPA):

·         All Singapore Citizens (SC) or Permanent Residents (SPR) with valid Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations results from any year.

·         International students studying in a Government School, Government-Aided School or Independent School in Singapore with valid Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level Examination results

Returning Singaporeans


All Returning Singaporeans (RS) children who wish to apply to Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) for a place in the JC 1 for the 2015 academic year, is required to participate in the School Placement Exercise for Returning Singaporeans (SPERS- JC/MI) conducted by Ministry of Education.

After RS receives the eligibility list and if RS is eligible to apply to Hwa Chong Institution (College), he can approach the school for admission.

Applicants are required to submit the following documents for the school's consideration.

  1. School Eligibility list
  2. Academic transcripts (GCE 'O' levels results or equivalent)
  3. Testimonials/references
  4. Achievements and awards
  5. Identification card/passport

International Students Application


International students who are currently not in Singapore government secondary schools can apply to Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) for a place in JC1 for the 2015 academic year.

Before you apply, please note the following essential information.

  • The new school academic year starts in January 2015.
  • School fee rates are available on our website under 'School Fee Structure'.
  • Accommodation facilities are available at our boarding school located within the school premises. Information on the facilities, rates, etc is available on the Hwa Chong Institution Boarding School homepage.

Admission Criteria

You should be between 16 and 18 years of age as of 1st January 2015.

Application Procedure

1.    Please download the application form here.

2.    Attach the following documents to the application form

¨       Birth certificate

¨       Valid passport

¨       Academic transcripts and education certificates

¨       Achievements & awards

¨       Any other supporting documents

Note   Kindly provide an English translation duly certified by respective embassy when the document submitted above is in a foreign language.

3.    All application must reach the school by 17th Oct 2014.  You can submit the form in person at our College Section Reception Office.  For those who intend to post the application form by mail, please use the address that is given below.

4.    Only shortlisted applicants are selected to sit for the Entrance Examination which be held in the College Section on 3rd November 2014 and 4th November 2014. The Entrance Examination comprises of English and Mathematics papers. For students who wish to take H2 Chemistry, they are required to sit for Chemistry papers. 

5.    A non-refundable registration fee of $150 will be charged for the entrance test. Applicants have to make full payment in cash at the College Reception Office, before sitting for test. 

6.    If the application form is incompletely filled or submitted late or the payment is omitted, the application will be rendered as void.

7.    The English Test will consist of an essay and a comprehension as covered in the GCE ‘O’ Level English syllabus. The Mathematics and Chemistry test will be based on Singapore Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level Mathematics/Additional Mathematics and Chemistry syllabus. 

8.    Applicants should be familiar with the English and Mathematics topics taught in mainstream secondary schools, especially in Secondary 3 and 4. Please refer to the ‘O’ Level syllabuses at the Subject Syllabuses website for more information.
