The institution is the culmination of the watershed merger in 2005 between the former Chinese High School (founded 1919) and Hwa Chong Junior College (founded 1974). With the merger, the Institution became a mega school with a total student population of about 4,300. The combined staff strength has exceeded 500, approximately three times that of a typical government secondary school.
Over 80% of the school’s close to 400 teachers hold advanced degrees (Honours or higher). About 35 staff members have PhDs, or are pursuing doctoral studies.
Teachers are at the centre of everything we want to achieve in Hwa Chong.
This is reflected structurally, where teachers form the core of the organisation. They demonstrate professional expertise in developing students holistically, and display strong pedagogical skills and content mastery. Some will be curriculum specialists, while others are care givers and researchers.
Teachers in HCI are also organised within Consortiums and Faculties. The Consortium-Faculty System not only provides opportunities for teachers to innovate. The system also effectively empowers teachers to discharge their duties with minimum bureaucracy.
Teachers are given the space to seek alternative pathways and take personal responsibility. The sole aim of Organisational Support is to provide vital administrative support that enables teachers to discharge their professional duties well.
